ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT BY
THE MOUNT CARMEL EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY OF NAGPUR
2020-2021 – PANDEMIC – COVID-19

 The members of the Mount Carmel Educational Society  gave no rest to their minds and bodies during the Lockdown imposed by the Government to combat Covid-19 Pandemic.  The first week of the Lockdown the members  met together to think in what way could they reach out to the people specially the daily wage workers who depend for their daily meals on their daily wages.

The message from the Provincial, the ex-officio of the Society  gave them more courage to act quickly. Since we did not have vehicle of our own,we tried to get permission from the police department to move out in vehicle to purchase and to distribute  Ration to the people but we did not get. After some days we came to know that we can go to buy grains from the wholesale market without any permission since we are the members of the a Society. So the members went in the truck to purchase grains from Kalamna Market which is 12 km away from us. The items purchased - Rice, wheat, toor dhal, horse gram, oil, sugar, tea leaves, chilly and saffron power in large quantity. All the members of the Society spent their time and energy in making packets of  Rice 5 kg, Wheat 5 kg, Toor dhal 1 kg, Horse gram 1 kg, oil 1 lt, Sugar 1 kg, tea leaves 200 gm, chilly and saffron powder 100 gms.  It took many days. The total number of grain kits were 755.

 

 So we reached out to 755 families of the following places Dhantoli Takia Slums, Masala migrants, Jeripatka slums. To distribute ration to Dhantoli Takia Slums, our area Corporator,  helped us giving his vehicle and few volunteers.

 

 

 

At the end of the month of April, we gave 245 Masks and 52PPE kits to Government Medical College, Nagpur, who were treating the Covid-19 Positive patients. 100 Masks were given to Tukdoji Cancer Hospital, Nagpur.

 Educational Aid is given to 5 students for their Computer eng., Nursing, and B,Ed training .

Mrs. Lata Girhe is helped to complete the construction of  her house. This family is very poor. They got some help from government.

 

12 Tribal girls of Ka Syiem Jingsuk Secondary School, Amlarem, Jowai, Meghalaya are sponsored by Mount Carmel Educational Society of Nagpur.

Mr. Mangesh Bowade was tested positive for Covid-19. It was second stage and the cost of treatment was high, because he was admitted in the private hospital since there was no bed available in the government hospital. We helped him by paying part of his treatment. We gave medical aid to other five families who were needy.

 Mrs. Vijayalaxmi who has lost everything due to loss in business is helped to pay part of the debt incurred.

2019-2020

 1.      Educational:

·         The Society continues to educate the girls of Butibori and Garratola (the old projects). Two boys’ hostel fees were paid by the Society.

·         The Society received the application from the Director of Nativity Youth Centre, Mawkyrwat, West Khasi Hill District, Meghalaya, requesting for educational aid to provide informal education and training in skill to the Tribal Youth of Mawkyarwat, West Khasi Hill District, Meghalaya. The Society’s Chair Person visited the place personally and made study of the situation and shared the information with the rest of the members of the Society. Therefor the Society felt the need to assist the Nativity Youth Centre in this great and worthy mission of empowering the Tribal Youth. The Society gave 50% of the total amount mentioned in the application.to purchase Computers, Sewing machines and musical instruments and furniture necessary to set up the class rooms.The instruments are purchased and the classes have already started. The Chair Person personally revisited the site and was satisfied that the amount was spent on its objectives.

INFORMAL EDUCATION TO THE TRIBAL YOUTH OF WEST KHASI HILLS, MEGHALAYA

·         The Society received many applications for educational aid from the poor and needy families. After scrutinizing and necessary inquires, the Society accepted 15 applications and the families were helped to pay their children’s school fees.

·         The Society purchased books, textbooks, uniforms, shoes etc. for the inmates of the Yuvajyothi Centre for Street children.

·         The Society also accepted the applications for educational aid for higher studies, like engineering, BBA, BA, BBE, Montessori Training etc. After scrutinizing and with necessary visits to the families, the Society accepted nine applications. They were good students and wanted to pursue higher education but the family couldn’t effort such huge fees. The Society gave only the part of the fees.

2.      Medical:

·         Two ladies were helped to have cataract operation and a third lady was helped to get lens so that she could continue her job and earn her livelihood.

·         A couple came begging for medical assistance as their new born baby was admitted in the hospital and was critical.  After making inquiries from the hospital and from their residence, the Society paid part of the hospital bill. The baby is recovered and growing well.

·         A family approached us requesting financial help to treat their mother who had blocks in her heart. The society immediately reached out by paying part of the total treatment. The patient is doing well now.

·         Another case was brought to us, a man’s leg was burnt and he needed urgent treatment. The Society bore the entire amount of treatment.

·         The Society helped three Cancer patients in their treatment and nourishment.

·         Medical help was given to 21 people who were needy by paying their medical bills.

3.     Self - employment: a family was helped to put up a food counter on wheels to earn the   livelihood.

 

4.   Loan waving:  A family was under depression due to loan. The mother is a single parent and children still studying. They had purchased an Auto-rickshaw on loan. Her husband left them with the Auto. The mother had to earn for their daily living and to see to her children’s studies. She took loan from local people in order to pay the Auto Rickshaw’s loan. It was vicious circle. In utter depression they approached us. After making the study of the situation the Society decided to give one lakh fifty-three thousand only to pay the loan to Credit Society and second one to a local loan lender. Still they have to clear the loan.

Another family approached us for financial help. This family is in great depression due to loss in their business. They have incurred huge debts. After seeing the pathetic state, the Society gave some help.

 

5.      Building Houses: The Society accepted twelve applications for housing project.

·         A family had built a house on their own plot few years back. Due to lack of funds, the flooring, plastering of the walls were not done. They also did not have toilet. When the members of the Society visited the family, there were wholes on the floor. They had two young girls and one of them was mentally challenged. The Society decided to help them to do the flooring and plastering of the wall. A toilet and bathing room was built.

·         This family had a Kacha house built by them on their own small piece of land. The mother of the family was bitten by a poisonous snake and she was miraculously saved from death. They approached us for help to build a concrete house. The Society decided to take up this project and saw to its completion.

·         This family had purchased a plot and were paying the cost of it in installments. Last few months they were not able to pay the remaining installments. So they approached us for help. After checking the documents and the contract of installment, the Society helped to pay the remaining amount and saw that the plot is in their name.

·         A family from Tumsar had a plot of their own, but could not effort to build a house. They had saved some amount but was not enough, so they approached us for help. The Society gave some help.

·         Another family who had lost their small house due to floods, had approached us. They were in pathetic condition. The Society helped them to build a small house.

·         A family approached us for help to renovate their house which was leaking. The father of this family is paralyzed. The Society helped to renovate their house.

·         Another family requested us for financial help to build the house. The Society gave part of the total amount.

·         Another five needy families approached us for financial help to renovate their houses which were in very bad condition. After visiting the families, the Society decided to help them according to their need.

 

 

1.      Needy people:  A number of needy people were helped with a small amount of cash or in kind whenever they approached us.

2.      Mouth and foot Painting Institute: The Society continues to help this great cause by purchasing their painting and with small amount of donation.

Response to COVID-19: In the last week of March 2020, the Society give ration kit to one hundred and eighty-two families of daily wage workers at Ajni, Nagpur.

2018-2019

 

The Society continued to give educational aid to the deserving students.

 

·         This year the Society received an application from a BBA student from Andhra Pradesh, who lost her father and was not able to pay the fees. The Society inquired about the applicant and agreed to pay the part of her fees.

·         The Mount Carmel Educational Society has sponsored 15Tribal Girls from Garrtola.  These children are from poor families. In collaboration with the Montfort School, we paid part of their fees which amounted to Ninety thousand only. The Society continues to pay the fees of 10 girls from Butibori.

·         An application from the student of B.A. 1st year from Trichy was received by the Society. After making necessary inquiries, the Society decided to give sixty-one thousand only.

·         The Society boughts books, textbooks, uniforms, shoes and and paid boarding fees of the 37 inmates of the Yuvajyothi Centre for Street children.

·         The Society received many applications from the students. After scrutinizing the application, nine of them were accepted who were deserving.

1.      Medical:  The Society helped two needy people by bearing the total amount spent on treatment.

·         A young girl was suffering from mental illness. The Society bore the whole cost of the treatment. Now she is normal.

·         A woman was suffering from TB, she was not able to effort to provide herself nourishing food and medication. The Society gave financial help and also nourishing food. She too is back to normal health. Both of them are doing well in their lives.

·         Twelve others were helped to pay their medical bills.

 

2.      Natural Calamities:

·         The Society reach out to the people of Kerala who were affected with floods

 

3.      Building Houses:This year, the Society has decided to continue to help families, who do not have proper shelter. The Society has helped seven families.

·         This family is very poor. They had spent all their earnings to buy a small plot and had put up four walls and needed some help to cover the roof by tin sheets. Seeing their pathetic state, the society decided to help them to put up a slab and to build a toilet. The work is completed.

·         Second family requested our help to buy a small plot. After checking the documents, the Society to give some help to purchase the plot.

·         Third family was helped to buy a plot by giving part of the total cost.

·         Fourth family was helped to renovate their house.

·         Three families were helped to do their minor repairs.

 

4.      Needy people:  The Society helped many other families who approached us in their need.
